Refusing to answer questions from the waiting media, Ms McCarthy spoke only to say "Yes", after being asked if she was relieved to be on home soil after her two-year prison ordeal.
She is expected to remain in Cavan, where family, friends and supporters have long campaigned for her release from prison.
This week, in a dramatic U-turn, Massachusetts state’s medical examiner reversed its findings based on lack of evidence, saying the child’s medical history “could have made her prone to easy bleeding with relatively minor trauma.”
While the murder charges have been dropped, it is not known whether Ms McCarthy will face charges relating to overstaying her six-month US visa. Experts believe she might have cause to sue the DA’s office for malicious prosecution, although it is unlikely to be successful, given the high level of discretion available to the prosecutor's office.
