Parents to be fined up to €140 if their child is late for school in the UK

Parents could face major fines in the UK if their child is regularly late for school.

Schools in parts of the UK have extended penalties for parents of children who are regularly absent and/or late for school. Parents could see fines of up to £120 (€138) if their child is frequently late and must pay the penalty with 21 days of its notice. The measures even go as far as to say parents will be prosecuted if they fail to pay the fine. There are also proposals for “no-idling zones” to be introduced outside schools. These proposals say parents should also be fined if they leave their cars running for too long while they drop off their children. Those in support of said proposals say it is to cut down on pollution in the school area. In parts of London, these measures are already in place and parents are forced to fork out £80 (€92) in on-the-spot fines by officers.
