"I’ve been affected by people in my family who had cancer and I wanted to showcase that," Katie continued. "I think a soap should reflect real life. I’m saddened that I’m leaving, but I want to create awareness."
She said that she was "so grateful" for the storyline, as it was "like a nice big spring board to jump off rather than leaving in a taxi."
"If I'm going to go, I want to go with a bang," she added.
It comes as the actress recently announced her first role after leaving Coronation Street.
Late last month, she announced she would be performing a panto this Christmas season at the Northwich Memorial Court in Cheshire.
