Children's operations postponed due to overcrowding

A number of Irish children have had their scheduled surgeries postponed today due to a bed shortage at Temple Street Children's Hospital. While a hospital spokesperson confirmed that emergency surgeries will be carried out as necessary, a sharp rise in number of winter-related admissions, especially babies under one with respiratory illnesses, meant the hospital was forced to open additional beds, cancelling planned operations. Speaking to the Irish Independent, ophthalmologist Professor Michael O’ Keefe slammed the conditions, which he says have been contributing to cancellations for some time now:

“The system is falling apart. Patients are not getting in or out,” he said.

"Around 20 children are scheduled to have some form of surgery in the hospital every day. These can include neurosurgery, general surgery, eye operations or ear, nose and throat surgery.”

Earlier this week 92 per cent of INMO (Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation) members voted in favour of strike action due to overcrowding in emergency departments nationwide. According to the union, they will now serve formal strike notice on the HSE and all health employers. The action is due to commence on Tuesday December 15.
